This piece is part of "While You Were Gone: Windows into a Strange New World." It is based on a photograph of window reflections at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, CT, taken while the campus was shut down during the 2020 pandemic. The series explores our altered ways of seeing and experiencing the world as we deal with the pandemic and with racial, economic, political, and ecological trauma.
Pat Miller is drawn to color, form, and character in an effort to capture moments that possess a particular beauty or humor. She especially likes to photograph creatures (birds, mammals, insects), reflections, abstracts, and waterscapes. Her photos range from abstraction to hyper-realism as she works to balance complexity and simplicity. Originally an academic trained in literature, Pat Miller became an artist in her middle years. After growing up in Canton, OH, she transplanted herself to New England in 1971, where she has lived ever since, residing now in Willimantic, CT, and Charlestown, RI.
