This piece began as a photograph of an old barn, its silo rising against an intensely blue sky. As I worked with it, human figures appeared, staring ahead at a daunting landscape. I was thinking particularly about the victims of the Parkland shooting and the difficult road ahead for the young people who are determined to change our national obsession with guns and dominance. The piece morphed into a study of climate degradation as well--our dominance and destruction of the whole earth. Our path to the future is disrupted, escape routes to the right are blocked, the sea is encroaching. It is a dangerous landscape, one that requires of us courage and determination.
Pat Miller is drawn to color, form, and character in an effort to capture moments that possess a particular beauty or humor. She especially likes to photograph creatures (birds, mammals, insects), reflections, abstracts, and waterscapes. Her photos range from abstraction to hyper-realism as she works to balance complexity and simplicity. Originally an academic trained in literature, Pat Miller became an artist in her middle years. After growing up in Canton, OH, she transplanted herself to New England in 1971, where she has lived ever since, residing now in Willimantic, CT, and Charlestown, RI.
